  • Grief By The Numbers 

     I opened the cupboard door and stared too long at the plates.I do the mental math and come up with seven.Only seven.It feels wrong. It feels wobbly and off balance, like one of those coffee shop tables that you desperately try to shore up with sugar packets under the short leg.Precarious. Like it could topple over at any time.It is our first meal around our family table without Nana.It’s been three months. I gather the plates and walk them to the dining room table. I notice long, audible sighs pressing through my pursed lips as if I have been holding my breath and just remembered that breathing is necessary. As if my body needs to release the built up steam I am trying not to notice. Everything just feels off, and sad, and not right. How many Sundays have I carried the plates, the flatware, and the glasses to the table in preparation for a birthday or family dinner? I look at her chair. Her place at the table. But I don’t want to linger there. I momentarily argue with myself whether I should leave it there or remove it. I don’t like either answer. I set down the plates, sigh again and move her chair against the wall. Now there are two chairs where there once were three. It looks strange and unfamiliar. I don’t like vacancy, I like a full house. Empty chairs and empty tables....a tune from Le Mis kicks up in my heart. I think to myself, my family is shrinking and I don’t like it.Keep moving, I whisper to myself in my inside voice.I deliver the plates. I set the flatware. I arrange the glasses.I carry her amber and gold glass dishes that I have been using as candle-holders for years and set them in the center of the table. These always make me think of you, Nana. She’s not the first to go, I think. Not our first loss. Not the first to tuck her legs under the table and settle in amidst all the family chatter and tell her son how delicious his pot roast is, laugh at the same family stories retold time and again with such relish and embellishment. Not the first to want to hear all the latest details of her granddaughters’ lives. The number of chairs at the table has been gradually shrinking for years, I know that. It already feels like there are more empty chairs against the wall than around the table. And each one hurts. I can’t believe our beautiful Nana is gone, my mind blurts. I look up from the flatware to see the framed photo collage we gave her on a long ago Christmas morning that now hangs in our dining room. Nana, surrounded by her family. Some of the photos taken right here at the table. The table where she will never, ever sit with us again. Where she will never again protest when we ask her for the fifth time that night to pronounce the word, “ “squirrel” in her proper Brittish accent - one she retained all these years after courageously leaving her family and friends as a war bride to follow her yank to America. The table where she could sit and enjoy her family’s pleasure in her. Say it again Nana, say it again. “Sk-wirrell” she would say, trying her best to not laugh at herself but taking such secret delight in ours. The moments that, if you have any sense of the passing of time at the time, you try desperately not to take for granted and make mental and emotional pictures. Memorizing moments. Why do we entertain the mad notion that somehow our elders will always be here? She’s strong as a horse! She’ll outlive us all! We don’t really believe she will outlive us all when we say that, but it’s a comfort, isn’t it? We cling to that unspoken security even while we know it is slipping away. I don’t believe that Nana is gone. But she is gone in the way that we are used to experiencing her here among us and we miss her. We snap at each other over superficial things.I cry easily.The smallest tasks can momentarily undo me.Like counting plates or moving chairs.

    Hi, there! I'm so glad you've arrived here. You're here for a reason and I'm elated to be able to support you on the journey.

     

    I'm Mary Thoma and I currently live in beautiful Louisiana with my hubby, Ron. We are empty-nesters with two beloved adult daughters who live away and two very spoiled dogs who live with us.

     

    My whole life I wanted to be my own boss, feel amazing in this body and serve others by giving back!

    Thankfully, Divine Intervention brought essential oils into my life during a yoga class, and that introduction to dōTERRA® essential oils started me on a journey of abundant, heart-centered wellness.

     

    At the time, all I knew was that the oils smelled amazing and I thought they would make a great gift of self-care for myself. As an actor, my work was stressful, with long hours and often relentless demands on my emotions. If oils could help with that, I was listening. I started learning more about dōTERRA’s essential oils and soon I was using them for emotional and physical support on set and in my life. Now I simply cannot imagine my life without these natural tools at my fingertips.

     

    I've never been able to keep a good thing to myself and soon my friends were curious, so I started a support group to help them learn how to use their new oils to meet their needs and the needs of their families. That support group is now a thriving business where I support women and families to lead healthier, happier lives by empowering and educating them about natural solutions to their wellness goals; whether they be physical or emotional, and let's be real, it's most often a little of both.

     

    And when we feel better physically and emotionally, everything flows in the right direction...

  • Essential Oils 101

    What is an essential oil?

    Essential Oils are made from plants for physical and emotional benefits. They are distilled from leaves, flowers, tree bark, seeds, or rind of fruit in concentrated amounts. Typically one drop of a dōTERRA® essential oil has a powerful effect making them affordable at just pennies per use! View a short video clip introducing essential oils HERE.

     

    How do I use essential oils?

    You will soon learn that there are hundreds of ways to use dōTERRA® essential oils, including relaxation, personal hygiene, household cleaning, cooking, and supporting a healthy body. Every oil has at least one of three application methods: Aromatic, Topical, or Internal.

     

    For Aromatic Use ~ Breathe in or use a diffuser to open up airways, improve mood, or freshen the air.

    For Topical Use ~ Use a carrier oil when applying to bottoms of feet or affected areas to target specific needs.

    For Internal Use ~ Drop in water, under tongue, or in veggie capsule to support mouth, throat, digestive system, or overall health.

     

    What are some basic safety tips?

    1) Photosensitivity - No sunbathing after applying citrus essential oils. Citrus oils are sensitive to the sun since they are made from the rind of fruit. Avoid direct sunlight to the exposed area for at least 12 hours of that location may have a skin irritation or burn. Oils applied underneath clothing should be fine.

     

    2) Hot Oils - If it starts to burn, skip the water. Use a carrier oil or whole fat milk. Because essential oils don't mix with water, applying water to the area can actually drive the burn in deeper. Ouch!

     

    3) Avoid These Areas - Never put essential oils in your eyes, inside ear canal, or up nose. However, you may apply oils around the eye bone in a C shape, on ear cartilage and behind ear bone, or diffuse essential oils.

     

    4) Dilution - Use a carrier oil such as fractionated coconut oil when applying essential oils topically to avoid skin sensitization.

     

    5) Safe Storage - The majority of all adverse reactions to essential oils by children have been as a direct result of accidental overdose and ingestion in large amounts. Keep out of reach of children. Use child proof safety caps.
